United Way Organizations Collaborate to Stabilize Renters in Pike County

August 29, 2024

Pike County, PA – Pocono Mountains United Way is joining United Way of Lackawanna, Wayne & Pike Counties to continue its delivery of a vital homelessness prevention and diversion initiative in Pike County. This collaborative effort aims to provide essential services to the community, including rental assistance and case management, backed by an allocation of over $52,000 in funding.

With 38% of Pike County households living below the ALICE threshold, the need for such services is urgent. ALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, represents households that earn more than the Federal Poverty Level but less than the basic cost of living. These households often struggle to afford the essentials needed for everyday life.

Gary Drapek, President/CEO of United Way of Lackawanna, Wayne & Pike Counties, emphasized the critical needs within the community: “Many families in Pike County find themselves at risk of homelessness, a situation exacerbated by the economic challenges of recent times. This initiative is not just about providing a roof over their heads but ensuring they have the right support to regain stability.”

The initiative is designed not only to prevent homelessness through financial assistance, but also to equip families with the necessary tools to sustain their living situations through comprehensive case management. This proactive approach addresses both the symptoms and the underlying causes of housing insecurity.

Michael Tukeva, President/CEO of Pocono Mountains United Way, highlighted the broader impacts of stabilizing housing: “Secure housing is a cornerstone of community health and prosperity. By ensuring that families have stable homes, we are contributing to better educational outcomes for children, stronger economic performance, and overall enhanced well-being in our community.”

The partnership between Pocono Mountains United Way and United Way of Lackawanna, Wayne & Pike Counties reflects a community-focused, collaborative approach to solving one of the most pressing issues facing residents of Pike County today. Through united efforts, the organizations aim to make a lasting difference, demonstrating that when communities come together, positive change is possible.
