Empowering Tomorrow: Generation Next Mentorship Program Overview

May 15, 2024

Stroudsburg, PA- A gathering of promise unfolded at the Generation Next Mentor Mixer Luncheon held yesterday. Hosted by Pocono Mountains United Way (PMUW) and sponsored by Chick-Fil-A Bartonsville and Wawa, this event brought together passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds, all committed to shaping the future by mentoring the next generation. The energy in the room was palpable as mentors and mentees mingled, forging connections that promise to make a lasting impact.

The cornerstone of the event was the unveiling of the Generation Next Mentorship Program. At its core, this program is all about providing first-generation, low-income, and/or students of color with the support, guidance, and encouragement they need to thrive in post-secondary education. But here’s the real magic: it’s not just about offering advice from afar. It’s about forging meaningful connections, building trust, and walking alongside our students every step of the way.

So, what exactly does the Generation Next Mentorship Program entail? Let’s dive into the details:

Mentor Matching Process

The adventure starts in the summer, as our Generation Next college freshmen prepare to commence their academic pursuits. Mentors are thoughtfully paired with students, aligning shared interests, experiences, and goals. This follows the students’ expression of their preferences, guaranteeing a tailored mentorship journey from the start.

Goal Setting and Support

Once paired, mentors and students embark on a collaborative journey of goal setting and support. Mentors provide invaluable guidance, helping students identify their goals, navigate challenges, and chart a course towards success. Regular check-ins ensure that progress is monitored, obstacles are addressed, and victories are celebrated.

Responsibilities & Expectations

The Gen Next Mentorship Program clearly defines the roles and expectations for mentors and mentees. Mentors are tasked with a variety of responsibilities, from securing the required clearances to aiding in the shift to higher education. They provide crucial skill-building guidance, promote a mindset of prioritization and support, and ensure consistent communication to monitor advancements and overcome obstacles.

Ongoing Support and Training

Mentors are not left to navigate this journey alone. The Gen Next Coordinator stands ready to offer ongoing support and assistance, ensuring the success of every mentorship pairing. Annual meetings provide an opportunity for reflection and recalibration, while regular training sessions enhance mentors’ skills and deepen their impact.
