From Times Square to the Poconos: Why a Bell in New York Rings for Our Community

By Michael Tukeva – President/CEO

This Tuesday, I will step onto a platform in New York City to take part in the Nasdaq Bell Ringing Ceremony, signaling the official close of the trading day. Preparing for that moment brings back memories of my first winter walk through the city. The lights, the excitement, even the sense of wonder felt a little like the movies. It reminded me that sometimes the world invites us into something larger than ourselves. That is what this opportunity represents. I have the honor of standing there for United Way, for the Pocono Mountains, and for all of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

The bell ringing is more than a countdown. Yes, it marks the start or close of the business day. But it is also a strong reminder that progress only happens when people move forward together. We see that same truth back home. Schools and students grow with one another. Landlords and tenants keep homes stable together. Employers and employees lift each other up. And nonprofits and donors join their hopes and resources to build the community we all want to live in.

Just last month, I met a grandmother raising her two young grandchildren. She told me she felt lost until a local nonprofit stepped in to guide her to support she did not know existed. She said, “You helped me breathe again.” That moment was not about an organization. It was about a community choosing to care. It was about donors who make that care possible.

When I ring that bell, I carry her story and thousands like it. My hope is that this moment shines a light on the incredible work happening every day in our region and the donors who make that work real.

So here is my invitation. Let us keep caring for one another. Let us look for chances to work side by side. And let us aim to understand each other, even when we disagree. The bell may ring in New York, but the heart of the work beats here at home, together.
