OP-ED: WHY DAY OF CARING IS REALLY ABOUT ALL OF US

By Michael Tukeva, President/CEO Pocono Mountains United Way

What defines a community? We know that community is shaped by our schools, our businesses, our neighborhoods, and routine of fall sports. But beyond those important structures and extracurriculars, the true measure of a community is how much we care for one another.

On Thursday, September 18th, Pocono Mountains United Way invites you to experience that truth firsthand at our annual Day of Caring. This special day of volunteerism is not simply about helping nonprofits complete projects. It is about something deeper…something I would call more essential. It is about our need as human beings to connect, to unite in strength, and to remind ourselves that community is primal. At our core, we all long for purpose, and caring for one another is one of the most powerful ways to find it.

Day of Caring is set aside for individuals and groups to roll up their sleeves and volunteer on one day projects at local nonprofits and in community spaces. The coordination of these opportunities, connecting hundreds of volunteers with dozens of project sites, is made possible through Pocono Mountains United Way and its VolunteerMonroe.org sign up platform.

Day of Caring begins with a complimentary breakfast provided by our friends at Barley Creek, who have once again shown their generosity and commitment to our community. After breakfast, volunteers will spread out across the county to lend a hand on projects that range from beautifying community spaces, to assisting local service organizations, and to bringing fresh energy into places that support our neighbors every day.

You do not need special skills to participate. What you need is simply a willing heart and the openness to let the experience reinvigorate your own sense of belonging. Because while the paint dries, the garden beds are weeded, and the supplies are organized, something greater is happening. We are building tighter bonds of community, reminding each other that none of us are alone, and that together…we are stronger.

And the best part? There is still time for you to register. You can sign up as an individual or bring a team of coworkers, friends, or family. But I promise you that you will walk away not only having made a tangible impact but also with the quiet joy that comes from serving alongside others.

If you have been feeling weary, disconnected, or in need of a lift, I encourage you to give Day of Caring a try. You may find your heart refreshed in ways you did not expect.

Join us. Be part of something bigger. Let us show what is possible when a community chooses to care.

Register by September 12th  at www.VolunteerMonroe.org.
