The Nurse-Family Partnership is a local effort connected to a national movement. Here in Monroe County, the program is for women who are having their first baby and might want a little extra help. Registered nurses with special training in prenatal and infant care as well as psycho-social development visit expectant mothers in their own homes. The visits begin in early pregnancy and continue until the child is two-years-old. During that critical time, close ties develop between the women in the program and their nurses. Healthy lifestyle habits are emphasized, parenting skills are developed, and career counseling is offered. In addition, lifestyle skills like cooking, conflict resolution, fiscal responsibility and the like are introduced through individual instruction and group activities.
